The Challenge: An Aging Tub and Shower That No Longer Worked

From a Step-Over Tub to a Walk-In Shower With Grab Bar Support

Lee's tub had developed cracks in the surround that let water seep through for some time before it was caught, eventually reaching the garage below. A plumber had already patched the crack once, but a patch doesn't address what's happening behind the wall, and with the home built in 1984, there was a real risk that ongoing moisture had already affected the backing and subfloor.

Charles's bathroom still had its original tub and tile surround, and stepping over the tub had become a daily inconvenience. He wanted a walk-in shower that would hold up long-term and include real safety features, not just a cosmetic update.

leaking old tub with tile to be replaced

Our crew tore out the original tile down to the studs and rebuilt the space around a new White Pearl shower base and wall system, with a wall-backed ErgoSafetyBar grab bar and a Healthcraft shampoo grab bar installed directly into the framing. For homeowners weighing a similar accessibility upgrade, our accessible bathroom remodel and tub-to-shower conversion pages walk through what's involved.

Before and After

The finished shower is built around a White Pearl shower base with matching wall panels, sealed as continuous sheets instead of individual tiles. A wall-backed ErgoSafetyBar grab bar and a Healthcraft shampoo grab bar give Charles secure support exactly where he needs it, and a 15-inch corner shelf keeps everyday products within easy reach.

Newly remodeled shower with chrome fixtures and waterproof walls

The chrome Retreat shower system replaced the original single shower head with a full rain and handheld combination, and a barn-style sliding door finishes the space with a clean, modern look that doesn't feel clinical.

Full scope of work:

  • Standard wetspace install package

  • Tile tear out

  • Green board shower system

  • White Pearl shower base and wall panels

  • Edge trim

  • ErgoSafetyBar grab bar

  • Healthcraft shampoo grab bar

  • 15" corner shelf

  • Tru-Temp valve with round trim

  • Retreat chrome shower system

  • Barn-style shower door

Benefits

Results of This Federal Way Walk-In Shower Conversion

Real Safety, Not Just Style

Two wall-backed grab bars give Charles secure support that a clamp-on or suction bar can't match.

No More Grout to Maintain

White Pearl panels seal as one piece, so there are no grout lines left to crack, stain, or collect mold.

Better Water Pressure

The Retreat chrome system replaced a single shower head with a full rain and handheld setup.

Built-In Storage

The corner shelf keeps shower products organized without a hanging caddy.

A Modern, Non-Clinical Look

The barn-style door and chrome finishes make the space feel like an upgrade, not a medical retrofit.

  • You want permanent, wall-backed grab bars rather than a temporary fixture

  • Your tub and shower are original to the home and show wear or dated colors

  • You want real storage built into the shower rather than a hanging caddy

How much did this Federal Way walk-in shower conversion cost?

How long did this project take?

This walk-in shower conversion was completed in two days.

What is a wall-backed grab bar, and how is it different from a clamp-on bar?

A wall-backed grab bar is anchored directly into the wall framing before the finish panels go on, making it far more secure than a clamp-on or suction-cup bar that relies on the tub wall or tile surface for support. We install grab bars this way in every accessible remodel.

Can I get two grab bars in my shower like this project?

Yes. We can install multiple grab bars positioned exactly where you need support, based on how you actually move through the space. We plan this during the free in-home consultation.

What is Sentrel's White Pearl?

White Pearl is a wall panel and shower base pattern in our grout-free system. It installs as large, sealed sheets instead of individual tiles, so there are no grout lines to crack, stain, or collect mold.

Does Oasis Bath Solutions serve my neighborhood in Federal Way?
